EX Hydrae (EX Hya) is an Eclipsing Intermediate Polar, a type of Cataclysmic Variable (CV). It's a close binary system where a low-mass star transfers material onto a highly magnetic White Dwarf. The strong magnetic field funnels the accreting gas into a column that hits the magnetic poles of the White Dwarf, creating hot accretion columns.
